A first edition of the novel ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’ signed by its author the late Colombian Gabriel Garcia Marquez has been stolen from the Macondo pavilion at the International Book Fair in Bogota.

The exhibition of the book took place in a locked cabinet at the International Book Fair in the Colombian capital, Bogota. The fair is dedicated to Gabriel Garcia Marquez, who died last year at the age of 87, and closed on Monday.

It was estimated that worth of the book is approximately $60,000, while the owner claims that for him its value can’t be measured in money. This literary treasure was locked in a cabinet at the Corferias exhibition center in Bogota where it was being exhibited as a part of a book fair and from where it was stolen on Saturday afternoon.

In Latin America that fair is one of the most important and this year had its theme the fictional Colombian city Macondo, where the events in ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’ take place.

The author of this book was the most famous and appreciated by critics Colombia’s writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez, who in 1982 won the Nobel Prize for Literature. And despite the fact how cynically it would sound, the value of his novels’ first editions have risen since Marquez death in Mexico in April of last year.

The owner of the 1967 first edition of ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’, Alvaro Castillo, who is a rare books trader, said that he purchased it Montevideo in 2006. Later that copy was signed for Mr Castillo by Garcia Marquez with the words:

To Alvaro Castillo, the old-book seller, as yesterday and forever, your friend, Gabo

Mr. Castillo said nothing about the price he had payed for the copy or how much more it would be with the dedication, the only thing he claimed that it was priceless to him.

Video footage from the exhibition center are being reviewed by the police, since there is a hope to discover who may be related to the committed crime.
