The main idea that lays behind iPet Companion is a series of pistons with toys connected to them, which can be controlled remotely over the internet.

The camera provides a possibility to watch the pets play or to take screenshots.

The invention of this cute technology product was accidental. The Idaho-based company was building a system that would help engineers to inspect and repair equipment robotically, being hundreds of miles away from the office. One of engineers, who tested this machine, saw that his cat became deeply interested in a new mechanism, starting to jump and play with robot’s moving parts. Moreover, he enticed them so much that spent the whole time playing with both, his pet and the machine.

The engineer company got in touch with animal welfare groups and proposed to use this robot in the local shelters to give people a cute hook and bring them to the shelter by ‘showcasing’ their adaptable animals.

The reaction of the public was eclipsing and now the company has installed more than a dozen devices in animal sanctuaries throughout the US. Users around the world are already lining in a queue to play with the cats for two minutes. The wait can take several hours but people don’t seem put off.

The system also gives a chance to allergic people to play safety with the animals, besides in hospitals it has been trialled for use too.

Private donors currently sponsor the iPet Companions installing “at cost” in animal shelters.
