Today the company said in its official blog, it will let its self-driving vehicles appear on the public roads of California this summer.

The vehicles are almost ready to be tested on public roads and just in few months several prototypes will hit the roads of Mountain View, (CA), where the office of the company is situated. There will be their safety drivers who will have brake pedal in order to be able to stop driving if needed. Besides the speed will be capped at 25 mph.

Prototypes will be using the same software that was used in self-driving Lexus RX450h, which were used as a base for research before Google introduced its own original car. The company said that these machines successfully covered nearly a million test miles on the road.

Chris Urmson, director of Google Self-Driving Car Project, says that they are looking forward to see how society will accept and interact with the new vehicles, and to identify issues that are unique to autonomous vehicles. In the coming years they would like to carry out small pilot programs with their prototypes in order to find out in what way people want to use them.
