Lawrence Herkimer has passed away at the age of 89. He was the founder of modern cheerleading. Besides, Herkimer, who is better known as ‘Herkie’, patented a key component of that kind of activity as he was the creator of famous pom-pom.

Herkie launched a quite successful business as he was the first who introduced cheerleading to the world. The ‘creator’ passed away because of heart failure on Wednesday, as New York Times stated.

When he was a student of Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, Lawrence Herkimer built the first cheerleading’s organisation as well as a magazine dedicated to it.

His business started after graduation in 1948. Mr Herkimer hadn’t then enough of money for launching his project, so he borrowed $600 from a friend of his father-in-law’s. The first location of his cheerleading business was the family garage.

After some time he started his first camp, which attracted 52 girls and a single boy. A year later the camp grew up to 350 participants.

Besides, Lawrence Herkimer appeared to be the pom-pom’s founder, which later became a key component and actually symbol of cheerleading.

He was the founder of the National Cheerleading Association, which shared a post via Twitter, paying tribute to Herkimer.

Cheerleaders of the whole world also shared numerous photos of their performing of Herkie, named after Lawrence Herkimer.
