San Diego. – On Monday, the officers of the US Coast Guard dropped off the record shipment of cocaine worth 1.01 billion dollars.
The weight of banned cargo is over 66,000 pounds. According to Los Angeles Times, this is the largest single offload of drugs in the history of the US Coast Guard. During the operation, 23 confrontations between border guards and smugglers took place in the Pacific.
Admiral Paul Zukunft, commandant of the Coast Guard, said in a statement:
There is still work to be done. We must increase already hard-earned momentum to curb the rising tide of crime, violence and instability in our hemisphere
It is known, that since October 2014 the US Coast Guard workers managed to intercept a total of more than 119,000 pounds of cocaine worth more than $ 1.8 billion, 215 people were arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking.
One of the biggest drug smuggling routes lies through the coastal waters of the western states of the United States. According to US special services, 65 percent of the cocaine entering the country is being imported by this way. Prohibited cargo is being usually transported from Colombia to the coast of Mexico on fishing trawlers and then reloaded to the small high-speed vessels, in which the cocaine is being moved across the US border.
