Egor Homakov found a way to generate unlimited amount of money on Starbucks and was able to be supplied with coffee for the whole life or steal a couple of $millions. But when he told about that flaw to Starbucks’ officials, they called his actions a ‘fraudulent activity’.

Mr Homakov tested his theory in one of the stores and when his attempt appeared to be successful he told Starbucks about that so they could improve the guard system, but the company called him fraudster and his actions malicious.

Despite the fact that no one said even simple ‘thanks’ to Mr Homakov for his report about possible fraudulent activity against Starbucks in the near future, the safeguards had been put in place to prevent replication, according to Starbucks officials.

Starbucks Gift Card was hacked

Online registration of Starbucks gift cards is possible because thanks to that customers can top up their account or transfer money between cards.

So Mr Homakov made two web browsers transfer money between the same cards at the same time. As a consequence the amount of money duplicated and funds were added to a gift card which hadn’t been paid for. Later Mr Homakov decided to testify the work and bought some drinks and a sandwich at Starbucks. After paying the given bill he owed to Starbucks $1.70, the sum of money that was earned by hacking, what later was repaid.

Starbucks seemed to be very rude to its ‘helper’, but security expert Graham Cluley said that it was an obvious reaction because nobody would want someone digging around in its systems looking for some bugs. He added that Starbucks was very lucky that the bug was found by someone who wanted to help the company with fixing the problem. Otherwise, a huge sum of money could be just vanished one day, so Mr Homakov did Starbucks a favor.
