The FBI is investigating now whether Amtrak was hit by some object before it derailed in Philadelphia this week.
An assistant conductor gave that suggestion when he heard the Amtrak engineer and the engineer from a nearby regional train talking the moment before the tragedy.
The conductor says he remembers the regional train driver said that the train was hit by some object. Brandon Bostian replied that the same thing happened to his train too.
Robert Sumwalt, the official with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), is leading the investigation. He said that police officers had found something suspicious on the left corner of the glass of the Amtrak train.
The train derailment killed 8 people. 200 people were injured as the train’s speed was twice times higher when it had to slow down before the curve on its way from Washington to New York.
The possibility of the fact that object hit the train brings new versions of the tragedy. According to this, the engineer could be distracted or even injured before the accident.
On Friday, a 32-year-old engineer Mr Bostian claimed he didn’t remember the last minutes before the crash happened. Mr Sumwalt said that Bostian was really cooperative with police.
FBI investigators will have a look at 188’s windshield which is said to be hit the same way. The Philadelphia Inquirer claims that the 3rd train, an Amtrak Acela, had been also hit by some object.
The Amtrak crash was the worst crash on US railways during the last 6 years.
