The faulty application is used on iPad for viewing and analyzing the flight plans. American Airlines became ‘electronic’ in 2013, when the company’s leadership decided to replace a huge amount of paper materials by electronic devices, thus saving their employees from lots of paperwork especially on the plane, before taking off. According to company’s calculations, this move will save them more than $1.2 million on fuel every year.
Meanwhile American Airlines said that they are still carrying out an investigation on the problem.
Not all of the flights have been cancelled. Some of the planes had to return to the terminal to access the nearest Wi-Fi network in order to fix the reason of the delay. Company brought their apologies to the passengers and said that they continued their journey as soon as the problem was fixed.
A passenger on board of one of the planes tweeted that three iPads weren’t working, but pilots managed to print out the flight map and continue the flight.
American Airlines isn’t the only company that decided to go for such a step. United Airlines also uses iPads instead of paper materials and Delta bought Microsoft Surface tablets for this purpose.
Besides lowering fuel costs, such a move also decreases the time, needed to prepare for the flight and it is helping the employees to use the information that can be updated in the real-time mode.
