After the collapse of a fourth-floor balcony in Berkeley, California, five Irish students have died, while at least nine others have been fatally injured.

After the collapse of a fourth-floor balcony in Berkeley, California, five Irish students have died, while at least nine others have been fatally injured.

The police came immediately after an emergency call at 01:00 local time. According to their reports there have already been wreckage when they came.

It is officially unknown what kind of gathering took place at the apartments. However it is believed that the students have held a party there, according to Irish officials. But the actual cause of collapse hasn’t been determined yet.

Those Irish student’s were believed have temporary worker visas while staying in US.

Photos from the scene shows that when a balcony on the fourth floor collapsed, it crashed to a balcony on the third floor.

The spokesperson of a Berkeley Police Department stated that the majority of injured got  life-threatening wounding.

However, four Irish students reportedly died at the scene while the fifth one died at the hospital, according to Charlie Flanagan, the Irish Foreign Minister.

He also stated the rest eight injured also appeared to be Irish students.

Victims identities haven’t been yet released because not all families have been notified.

Ireland’s U.S. ambassador Kevin O’Malley paid tribute to the families and friends of the Irish students who passed away, via Twitter.

Irish President Michael D. Higgins also said a few words even while being on a trip to Italy:

My heart goes out to the families and loved one’s of all those involved
