It is currently possible to enroll on the first course with the title: drag kings and drag queens performance in Lancashire, UK.

From January 2016 the Edge Hill University will offer to third-year undergraduates the course that will be part of the performing arts, dance and drama degree.

During the time of taking this course, the students will have an opportunity to explore drug acting, costume and the using sense of humour. Besides, the thematic fulfillment will include the relationship between performance, gender, sexuality and identity. Gay and lesbian theater together with the theory around transgender identities and activism will be also included in that module.

The idea made up by the senior lecturer Mark Edwards, who is the best known as Council House Movie Star writer and producer. Edwards at the present time is focusing his research on ageing performers and drag queens and equality for boys and men in the world of dance. He claimed that if in the past decade such performance act form as Drag was facing a relative decline, it is becoming much more popular nowadays. Moreover, coming through the new and exciting emerging forms, makes this module all the more relevant to performance contexts.

Edwards said that this part of undergraduate studies in the past not only explores drag as a highly camp performance art, but at the same time it engages with complex gender as well as feminism and exploring social and political implication of doing gender while acting.

There’s a lot more to drag studies than wigs, make-up and high heels!

– claimed Mark Edward.
