A young woman was shocked when she saw her private photos all over the internet.
34-year-old Nikki Rettelle is still in a slight shock after the revenge of her ex-boyfriend, “Mr. Wonderful” as Nikki calls him. Rettelle was meeting with him from time to time, till the moment, when she had noticed a blinking red light that came from the pen holder in the room of her boyfriend. She was curious enough to disassemble it, and what she found inside, almost horrified her. Inside the device Nikki found a memory card, filled with lots of images of herself, starting with innocent TV-watching, to more private photos of her changing her clothes.
The bitter truth was that “Mr. Wonderful” installed hidden cameras all over his and her houses. When Nikki exposed and broke with him, “Mr. Wonderful” signed her private photos with Nikki’s full name, birth date, addresses and phone numbers and uploaded them to the most popular porn web sites.
I spent a lot of time, searching and finding more and more of my private photos
– recalls Nikki.
Though such cases didn’t get much public, they are happening more often than one can think. Retelles lawyer, Elisa D’amico, said that she and her colleague have lots of such cases.
It’s turning into an epidemic
– said D’amico.
Similar case took place in Chicago. A woman, who called herself Jane, remembers the horror, that she went through, when her ex-husband posted photos and videos, made during their honeymoon. According to her, one video has been viewed more than a million times.
With everybody’s watching the most private, intimate moment of your life, I felt like being raped
– said Jane.
Both victims said that law was helpless in this situation. The lawyers only shrugged and advised them not to make mistakes like this in the future.
The revenge porn in the law-environment is classified as the “non-consensual pornography” and it is extremely hard for the law to define the nature of revenge porn. Jane’s lawyer Daliah Saper said that they were trained to handle cases, when their client are threatened by the apparent danger. She also added that her clients feel ashamed, but their lives are safe, so they won’t make it the top priority.
Yet, it’s not clear to the end, how such porn cases are conducted, what laws have been broken, how the compromising materials were obtained and how they ended up at the public site. Saper added that they are using traditional laws that stayed constant for years and trying to adjust them to this new way of crime.
Meanwhile, Retelle is feeling rather positive about the incident, and she even has a thankful message for “Mr. Wonderful”.
I thank you. Because of you, It’s the first time, in my whole life, when I truly love myself because of what I became after having gone through all this
– said Nikki.
