Della Curry was fired from her job as a dinner lady. The reason of that was the fact that she gave free food for children in need.

Before being sacked, Della Curry, a mother of two, worked as a kitchen manager of Dakota Valley Elementary School in Aurora, Denver. She loved her job a lot, but on Friday the woman told CBS that she was fired. School authorities found it unacceptable that Curry gave lunches for free to children who couldn’t afford it.

Mrs Curry told CBS:

I had a first grader in front of me, crying, because she doesn’t have enough money for lunch. Yes, I gave her lunch

There is a rule in the Dakota Valley Elementary School which says that if a child forgets his or her lunch and is not subsidised for lunches should get a hamburger with one slice of cheese in it and a glass of milk. However, Della Curry thinks that it is not enough.

The woman admitted that she broke the law, but according to her it must be changed.

Parents of the school support Mrs Curry and say that she should be reemployed. They think a person cannot be punished for compassion. Daren Hill said that she shouldn’t have been fired as she was just trying to help.

Mrs Curry is not going to give way. What is more, she is very confident to make some changes into the law.

Cherry Creek School District, responsible for school managing, claims that the school provides children with hot food only three times in case they have forgotten money. The fourth time is hamburger and milk. It was also stated that the prices for lunches are so low that school can’t cover the lunch program.
