About 21,000 gallons of oil spilled on California Coast. A four-mile spill covered a lot of beaches all around the coastline.

Due to the broken pipe, 21,000 gallons of oil poured into the ocean off Refugio State Beach. Before workers managed to shut it off, it had caused a lot of damages on the territory.

Plains All American Pipeline possesses the pipe. It took about 3 hours for workers to fix it.

According to the US Coast Guard, the oil slick had reached 50 yards into the sea and 4 miles off the shore. The Environmental Defense Center thinks the spill is devastating.

As many species of whales are migrating now, the Santa Barbara-based group became really concerned about the situation. As authorities received a lot of complaints of a foul smell from people who live near Refugio State Beach, they started reacting immediately. People claimed, they felt strong fuel smell in the wind from the shore.

Santa Barbara County Fire Captain, Dave Zaniboni, said that workers found huge oil slick that formed in the waves. They concluded that the reason of leaking was a broken pipeline under US 101 freeway.

Plains All American Pipeline managed to shut down the pipe and blocked the culvert. In an official statement Plains All American Pipeline expressed its regrets about the accident. Plains is also trying to reduce the damages of oil slick and limit its environmental impact.

The Coast Guard is trying now to clean up the spill. A Coast Guard representative Jennifer Williams said that about 850 gallons of oil have been removed.

The huge spill is expected to be shoved by the winds to Santa Barbara. The same sector of coast was contaminated in 1969 with the biggest oil spill at that time. That led to the American environmental movement creation.

Modern spill have got a name: The Santa Barbara Oil Spill. By now it has killed thousands of birds, seals and dolphins.
