On Friday the US Supreme Court legalized the same-sex marriage nationwide. It was admitted that refusing to give marriage license to gays and lesbians contravenes the Constitution.

That US Supreme Court’s ruling means that more than a decade of severe legal battles between Americans came to an end. Now, those 14 states, which banned same-sex marriages, have no longer rights to enforce such bans.

Immediately after legalization on Friday, gays and lesbians in such affected states as Georgia, Michigan, Ohio and Texas rushed to get married. Although, not all American citizens had that possibility as the authorities of some states, including Mississippi and Louisiana, stated same-sex marriages had to wait till addressing of procedural issues.

However, there was no end for cheering at the scene. Just after the announcement of a new ruling, thousands bursted into tears while another half loudly cheered ‘USA USA USA!’.

One of those, who nervously wait for the court’s decision was demonstrator Jordan Monaghan, who called his mom and said minutes after a new rule was announced:

Hey mom, I’m at the Supreme Court. Your son can have a husband now

The US President Barack Obama said in his official speech for the event that the ruling was a ‘victory for America’ and added:

When all Americans are treated as equal, we are all more free

Justice Anthony Kennedy, by whom the majority opinion in the 5-4 decision was written, stated:

No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were.
As some of the petitioners in these cases demonstrate, marriage embodies a love that may endure even past death.

Obviously there were opponents of the plea, who claimed that voices of thousands Americans were ignored. Mike Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor and presidential candidate, said that the new ruling was an out-of-control act of unconstitutional, judicial tyranny.

Kennedy stated directly to these conservatives, saying: “It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves.
Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right.”

The White House celebrated the new ruling in its own way. After Friday’s sun went down, the rainbow-colored lights were projected onto the house’s exterior.
