If you look at the number of Americans killed since 9/11 by terrorism, it’s less than 100. If you look at the number that have been killed by gun violence, it’s in the tens of thousands

– said Obama in an exclusive interview with the BBC.

The President tried to restrict the right of citizens to own guns in 2012, after the shooting of 26 students and teachers at the school “Sandy Hook” in Connecticut. By presidential decree, the Government has developed a number of proposals, most of which were supported by the Americans. In particular, it was proposed to ban the sale of semi-automatic weapons, as well as to oblige the US citizens to present identification when purchasing weapons and create a national database in which it could have been possible to fix the fact of sale. However, the project wasn’t implemented due to the representatives of the “gun lobby” and its allies in the US Congress. As Obama said later, “all of us should be ashamed of it”.

Besides, he claimed that he wouldn’t stop fighting for gun safety laws during the time left in his presidency:

For us not to be able to resolve that issue has been something that is distressing, but it is not something that I intend to stop working on in the remaining 18 months
