US President Barack Obama now has his own Twitter account @POTUS (President Of The United States).

In less than half an hour after launching his own Twitter feed, Mr Obama attracted 100,000 followers.

His first tweet as @POTUS was:

Hello, Twitter! It’s Barack. Really! Six years in, they’re finally giving me my own account

In 2007 the account @BarackObama, operated by the Organizing for Action staff, was launched, where the President was signing the tweets he crafted himself with the letters BO.

According to the White House website blog, this new @POTUS Twitter account is to serve as a new way for President Obama to make his Administration the most open and participatory in history, while engaging directly with the American people, where the tweets are to come exclusively for him.

It’s about time, @POTUS! –mo

@POTUS handle will transfer to the next President when Obama leaves office on 2017, what was confirmed by a White House official.

President Bill Clinton joked on that theme, tweeting:

Welcome to @Twitter, @POTUS! One question: Does that username stay with the office?

The following day he got the answer from Mr Obama:

Good question, @billclinton. The handle comes with the house. Know anyone interested in @FLOTUS?

65 people, including Bill Clinton, George Bush and the First Lady’s account, are followed by President Obama, but not Hillary Clinton or UK Prime Minister, David Cameron.
