Teenagers leave one of the most popular social networks in the world.
The number of young Facebook-users, from 13 to 17 years old has decreased to 88% compared to the year 2013 (94%) and 2012 (95%) says the report of the Frank N. Magid Associates Inc. Also, the investigation showed that other messaging services like Twitter, WhatsApp and Instagram became more popular in the teens group.
One of the reasons for such a reduction of popularity is that due to the latest researches, users don’t find Facebook trustworthy enough. Only 9% of the respondents agreed to the statement that this is a trustworthy site whereas almost 30% of people said that these statements refer rather to Pinterest. This service also received higher grade for “fun”: 40% against 18% in Facebook.
One of the main reasons, why teens are dumping Facebook is the fact that more and more adults are joining this social network. Teenagers feel embarrassed to be associated with Facebook even bigger than before. Earlier, parents were worried about their kids spending a lot of time online and now they ask their children to stay on Facebook and post information about their living.
Another study from The Education Database Online shows that more and more parents register their own accounts on Facebook. During the time period from 2010 to 2012, the amount of mothers in the USA who have their own page on Facebook increased from 50 to 72%. And most of them admitted that overseeing their children online was the main reason for them to register on Facebook.
Daniel Miller – the professor of material Culture in London University College says that the key point in a decision of a teen to leave Facebook is the day when his parents send him a friend request.
