Workhorse Group (WKHS) is planning to use drones alongside with the usual postmen to deliver packages to the receivers. Earlier, a popular online trading platform ‘Alibaba’ offered their customers to deliver their goods by drones. In the official promotion video we can see a tea-thirsty customer that orders tea online and in an hour the tea package is being delivered to the happy customer by the drone. To compare, it takes minimum a day to deliver the package to the the receiver the usual way. It’s completely clear that now we see a strong contest between online shops for the customer that try to attract the customers by offering different unusual services, including fast and automated delivery.

Long years of partnership between WKHS and University of Cincinnati resulted in a courageous project that includes the electric delivery truck called “Workhorse” and “Horsefly” – the flying delivery drone.

We are very much confident in our new drone-delivery technology

– said Duane Hughes, the director of sales at WKHS.

The delivery process looks like this: the mailman drives to the needed neighborhood and begins delivering mail or big packages. Meanwhile drone, which is either fully automated or controlled by a human, delivers packages to the addresses within the 1-2 mile radius. This way, the mailman saves his time and is able to reach more houses. The 5th generation of Horsefly drones can carry a 15-pound cargo while having the weight of 15 pounds. The drone can accelerate up to 50 mph, but the usual speed will be around 35 mph. The drone is also capable of automatic landing on top of the truck and charging. And as it is attached to the truck, it removes the need of a long-miled journey for the drone to deliver the package thus saving energy and money for the delivery company.
