According to US regulators, food that contains a lot of trans-fats is very dangerous and must be banned within three years.

Partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs), which appear to be the main base of trans-fats, are not “generally recognised as safe.” The US Food and Drug Administration thinks that thousands of lives can be saved if such kind of food will be banned. According to them, the level of fatal heart attacks can be decreased by reducing consuming of trans-fats.

Since 2006 all food suppliers have to show information about trans-fats on food labels. However, health experts think that’s not enough as Americans still eat a lot of harmful food.

FDA’s Acting Commissioner Stephen Ostroff said in his statement:

The FDA’s action on this major source of artificial trans-fat demonstrates the agency’s commitment to the heart health of all Americans

He also added that the main aim they want to achieve is to save more lives by reducing coronary heart diseases.

Some facts about trans-fats:

– in the 1970s consuming of trans-fats dramatically increased when margarine became popular;

– foods that contain a lot of trans-fats are French fries, fried meats and frosting;

– trans-fats are very cheap to produce and they make you food live longer;

After the FDA started to put labels about trans-fats on food, the consumption of them decreased by 78% in US. A lot of European countries are trying to get rid of them as well.
