On Tuesday Sam Smith turned 23 and now he is recovering from an operation on his vocal cord, which is said to be successful.

According to Massachusetts General Hospital, Smith received laser  microsurgery. The surgery was performed by Seven Zeitels. Sam Smith was forced to endure it in order to stop bleeding of vocal cord.

Sam’s doctor Zeitels expects that the worldwide known singer will fully recover soon. According to the hospital statement, the surgery was obligatory as “unstable blood vessels in the vocal cord can rupture and prevent vocal performance”.

Zeitels, who specializes in benign and malignant cord problems, used special lasers to stop the bleeding of Sam’s vocal cord.

Smith is not the only famous singer who chose Seven Zeitels to take care of his voice and cord problems. Steven Tyler, Lionel Richie and Adele were patients of the doctor. And, fortunately, all of them recovered and returned to performing.

Michael Pitman, an expert in voice restoration and director of the Voice and Swallowing Institute at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai said that there are a lot more singers who face same problems. He stated that such kind of trauma can happen to anybody. You don’t need to be a professional singer to need the surgery. Such operations are being done all over the country.

Smith openly shared his cord problems with social media. He also regrets about all the performances that was cancelled due to the surgery.
