To the greatest regret of all ‘Sesame Street’ fans, the 65-year-old Manzano, well-known and beloved Maria, announced that she is retiring. The plan to leave the show after long 45 years of working was recently revealed by the actress at the American Library Association Annual Conference that was held in San Francisco.

The first Manzano’s appearance on ‘Sesame Street’ was in 1971 and then in 1974 she started starring regularly. Her character ‘Maria’ was an integral part of the long-running show. In the series Maria together with her TV husband Luis, played by Emilio Delgado, are running the Fix-It Shop.

Beside starring in the ‘Sesame Street’ Marzeno was also another important part of the show as she had been also serving as a writer.

Sonia Manzano is the owner of 15 Emmys. She has also written her biography, entitled “Becoming Maria: Love and Chaos in the South Bronx,”, which is to be published in August.

A lot of ‘Sesame Street’ fans became deeply disappointed with the retirement of their favorite actress. Sadness spread across social media, but Manzano answered some of them on Twitter, saying not to be ‘bummed’.

She also stated that we may see her at the show’s 50th anniversary in 2019.
