According to the statement of the actor’s publicist Daniel Bernstein, Mr Van Patten died of diabetes on Tuesday in Santa Monica, California.

He was born in New York and started his career as a model and child actor. In 1935 he made his debut on Broadway when he was only seven years old. He was named then ‘Dickie Van Patten’.

Later he appeared in 27 different Broadway plays as well as in the classic comedy ‘Mister Roberts’.

Besides, he also appeared in a TV-series ‘Mama’, where he starred as one of the sons of a Norwegian-American family in early 1900s San Francisco.

“Sanford and Son”, ”The Streets of San Francisco,” ”Adam-12,” ”Happy Days”, ”The Love Boat”, “Touched By An Angel”, ”Arrested Development” were in the list of Van Patten TV appearances. Besides, he had recently starred in the “Hot in Cleveland”.

However, his most successful project was as Tom Bradford, who was a widower and a father in a middle age. He had eight children with his wife Abby, played by Betty Buckley. That ABC series had been aired from 1977-1981.

Dick Van Patten’s 62-year-old wife, Patricia Van Patten, survived him as well as his three sons named Nels, Jimmy and Vincent.
